Made from clay, Moroccan pottery from Safi (Asfi, Morocco) is distinguished by its handcrafted decorations called ZOUAK. These designs have always been inspired by typical Moroccan motifs, but they are being modernized to bring new collections to life. Imperfections are a sign of the Asfaouis' handiwork: no two tajines are exactly alike.

A table serving tajine, not a cooking tajine

This tajine is a piece for serving and presenting at the table: cooking in it is prohibited. Your slow-cooked dish is prepared in a casserole, then brought to the table under the zouak lid, where it becomes the centerpiece of the meal.

Any tajine recipe can be presented in it: a chicken tajine with olives and preserved lemons, a prune and almond tajine, a kefta or meatball tajine. A lamb tajine with vegetables, a spiced fish tajine, or a saffron duck tajine also have their place. This Moroccan dish thus retains its traditional tajine appearance right up to the moment of serving.

For table setting, we recommend a simple arrangement that highlights the decoration. For individual servings at the table, the same zouak design is available in a smaller format with the turquoise chiseled individual tajine product page.

Safi pottery, the birthplace of Moroccan tajines with zouak decoration

Safi is a city of potters where traditional craftsmanship is passed down from workshop to workshop. Each design is painted by hand: meticulous painting, whose slight variations serve as a reminder that no piece is machine-made.

  • Unique piece handmade by Berber artisans in Morocco
  • Color: black, white, a contrast that pairs with neutral or colorful tableware
  • Available in 4 different patterns, to match or vary several pieces
  • Dishwasher safe / microwave prohibited
  • Cooking prohibited: reserved for serving and presentation

It is dishwasher safe. To preserve the paint for as long as possible, we recommend washing with mild water and allowing it to air dry. The same Moroccan zouak art is featured on the black and white zouak tajine product page, another design from this collection.

Like all our Moroccan tajines, this model is a piece of Moroccan craftsmanship selected by Tifinagh Shop for Moroccan cuisine and home décor, online and in our store in Nice. The origin, designs, and care for this model are detailed on the Safi pottery tajine with zouak decoration product page.

Capital of Moroccan pottery, Safi is a city on the borders of the Mediterranean and bathed in sunshine. It is here, in one of the oldest districts of the city called "The Hill of the Potters" that these traditional earthenwares are made.
