Berber rugs are not just decorative objects. They are the pages of a book that Amazigh women have written for millennia — with their hands, the wool of Atlas sheep, and the colors of the Moroccan earth. At Tifinagh Shop, every rug we offer carries this story. Let us tell it to you.
01 — Origins
A heritage over 2,500 years old
The first traces of Berber weaving date back over 2,500 years, in the mountainous regions of Morocco where Amazigh tribes lived in harmony with their environment. The abundant wool of Atlas sheep provided both raw material and warmth during the cold nights of the high altitudes.
But more than just blankets, these rugs were — and remain — a visual language. Each motif is a symbol, each color an emotion, each knot a silent prayer. The weavers did not follow written patterns: they carried these designs in their memory, passed down from mother to daughter for generations.
"For these women, weaving a rug was writing their autobiography — in colors, in shapes, in silence."
02 — Main Types
Each region, its unique signature
Morocco has several main families of Berber rugs, each bearing the imprint of its region:
| Type | Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Beni Ourain | Natural cream wool, black geometric patterns. Thick, soft, timeless. |
| Azilal | Vibrant colors on a white background. Each piece is unique and full of life. |
| Boucherouite | Made from colorful fabric scraps. Moroccan raw art par excellence. |
| Kilim | Flat weave without knots. Lightweight, reversible, ideal for walls and floors. |
| Zanafi | Wool and cotton, sober and elegant stripes. Originating from Ouarzazate. |
03 — Manufacturing
From fleece to floor: a labor of patience
Manufacturing begins in spring with sheep shearing. The wool is then washed, carded, and spun by hand on a traditional spindle — a technique unchanged for centuries.
Dyeing is crucial. Authentic pieces use natural dyes: henna for reds, indigo for blues, pomegranate for blacks, saffron for yellows. These colors age beautifully.
A 2×3 m rug can require up to 400 hours of manual labor. It is this incompressible time that gives it all its value.
04 — Care
Caring for your rug for generations
- 🧹 Regular maintenance: Vacuum at low power in the direction of the pile, once a week.
- 💧 Fresh stain: Blot with a clean cloth. Never rub. Cold water only.
- ☀️ Sun: Avoid prolonged direct exposure that discolors natural fibers.
- 🌊 Washing: Hand wash or entrust to a professional. No washing machine.
- 📦 Storage: Roll without folding, wrap in breathable cotton.
05 — Our Commitment
Shop fair, shop consciously
At Tifinagh Shop, each rug is selected directly from Moroccan women's cooperatives, with fair and transparent compensation. Each piece is accompanied by an origin sheet specifying the region, technique, and type of wool.
By choosing an authentic rug, you directly support artisans and participate in the preservation of a living art that, without this support, risks disappearing with the generations who carry it.
